Tips to get ready for your (first) surf lesson

You've booked a surf lesson, and you don't know how to prepare? This post is for you! Here's a list of recommendations to get you ready for your surf lesson. If you still have questions, don't hesitate to contact us!

1)      What to wear

It's most comfortable to wear a swimsuit that fits snugly and allows you to move freely. The surf instructor will give you a “rashguard”, to protect your skin from the sun and the irritation that the board could cause on your abdomen with friction.

The rashguard is a close-fitting top for swimming or surfing, worn over swimwear, or with a pair of bikini bottoms or trunks.

For men, a simple pair of swim shorts is perfect!

For women, if you want to be totally comfortable at the bottom, we recommend saying goodbye to the little string Tanga bikini and opting instead for a pair of High-waisted bottoms/classic bikini bottoms or shorts. Of course, if you don't have any, you don't have to buy them. You can, for example, use a pair of tight-fitting sports shorts over your swimsuit, so as not to be embarrassed in the water.

Why do we care about the clothing? Because surfing is a sport. You'll be moved by the waves and the movement in the sea. It's a good idea to make sure you're comfortable during your unforgettable experience, but if you don't have the recommended clothing, that's okay too!

2)      Protecting yourself from the sun

In Costa Rica, the sun is particularly intense, especially when it reflects off the water, which increases the risk of sunburn and skin damage.

We recommend you use a minimum 50 SPF water-resistant sunscreen!

If you can, choose a mineral sunscreen (based on zinc or titanium dioxide), which offers effective protection and is more respectful of the marine environment.

Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas, including the face, neck, ears and back of the knees, and reapply every 2 hours.

3)      Stay hydrated

Heat, sport, sweating and the sea all increase the risk of dehydration. It's very important to take at least 1 bottle of water per person.

4)      Avoid alcohol the night before and get a good night's sleep

To get the most out of your surfing lesson, we recommend limiting alcohol and avoiding substances the night before. Surfing requires energy, concentration and good reflexes, and being well rested will enable you to enjoy yourself in complete safety! Coming fresh and alert will also help you progress faster and enjoy every moment on the waves.

5)      What to eat before a lesson

For a first surfing lesson, it's best to eat a light meal about 1-2 hours before you start. Choose easily digestible foods rich in complex carbohydrates and proteins. For example, a banana, oatmeal or a small portion of rice with vegetables. Avoid heavy or excessively fatty meals, which can cause bloating or discomfort during exercise. It's also important to stay well hydrated before and after your session, but avoid drinks with too much sugar or energy, which can cause energy slumps.

6)      Relax and keep an open mind

Surfing can be a challenge at first, so it's important to stay relaxed and not put too much pressure on yourself. It's okay not to get it right the first time, the important thing is to have fun and learn at your own pace. Pura Vida !

7)      Where will I put my stuff?

We often have people looking after your belongings while you're taking your surf lesson. We still recommend that you leave your valuables in your accommodation and take only the bare essentials. If you absolutely must take your valuables with you, we have a locked and secure place to store them.

8)      What if I'm afraid of the sea?

We fully understand that the ocean can sometimes be intimidating, but it's essential to stay calm. Keep in mind that your instructor is there to keep you safe and will always respect your needs. The location of our surf lessons is in an ideal spot where the sea remains relatively calm. If you find yourself in a stressful situation, take a deep breath to relax. Don't hesitate to share your fears with your instructor, he's there to help!

9)      Be open to advice

Listen to your instructor, who will guide you through the lesson. Following instructions with confidence will help you progress faster and get the most out of the experience.

We’re excited to provide you with an unforgettable surf experience!
